Blue Dog Dems Actually Want to Increase Health Care Costs

Blue_Dogs.jpgMost Americans, except for the wealthy and politicians, know we are provided some of the poorest quality in health care yet pay excessive amounts of income for health care.  Today health care costs are sucking the life and money out of Americans both economically and physically.  With 67% of Americans, both Democrats and Republicans pleading for a government, Medicare-like, health care option, Congress dismisses the pleas of U..S. Citizens in favor of selling out to huge donations they receive from health care and insurance companies.

While it is not surprising Republicans oppose a single payer health care option, it is surprising some Democrats have bought into the Republican mantra of selling their support for Americans in favor of taking money just has Republicans have done and are doing.Today, more than $80 million dollars from health care and insurance companies have been given to Democrats in an effort to buy (bribe) their support to oppose a government run health care option.

  • Sen. Max Baucus has received $3,973,485
  • Sen. Ben Nelson has received $2,214,715
  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein has received $1,749,887
  • Sen. Mary Landrieu has received $1,653,943
  • Sen. Evan Bayh has received $1,565,088
  • Sen. Blanche Lincoln has received $1,953,541
  • Sen. John Kerry has received $8,994,077
  • Sen. Joe Lieberman has received $3,308,621

These Democratic Senators who should be supporting hardworking, taxpaying Americans are buying into the Republican game of putting money and politics over people, over families and over America’s children.

It is shameful that our government continues to be bought and sold for profit while Americans suffer the consequences of declining health care and health care coverage.

As Leo Gerard, writing for Campaign for America’s Future states “In the year 2000, the last time the World Health Organization stacked up countries’ health systems, the United States came in 37th, behind the likes of Chile, Morocco, Cyprus, even drug war-torn Colombia, to which the U.S. donates hundreds of millions in foreign aid. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pointed out late last year that the U.S. ranked 29th in the world for infant mortality in 2004, a statistic that steadily worsened since 1960, when the U.S. ranked 12th. Twenty-two countries’ rates were below 5 deaths per 1,000 live births. The U.S. rate was 6.78 deaths. The poor quality of our health care and its excessive expense are sucking the life out of America. For the health of the nation, both physically and economically, we need a system with a public option-that means a government-sponsored and managed alternative.”

He also states “the average expenditure per individual, America remains in the undesirable position of most profligate spender. The average for an American was $7,290 in 2007, the latest year for which comparable statistics were available. But the average for the 30 countries in the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development was a mere $2,964, with the closest to the U.S. being Norway at $4,763.”

How can American businesses, especially small business compete on an international market with such outrageously high health care costs?  Did we not learn anything from the recent bankruptcies of GM and Chrysler in how exorbitantly high health care costs prohibited these auto makers from competing with competition from other countries.

History shows conservatives opposed great reforms like Social Security and Medicare by screaming socialism. Now, Blue Dog Democrats seem to be buying into the GOP argument. Republicans were wrong then, and they’re wrong now and so are Blue Dogs!

In my book, these so-called Blue Dogs are actually YELLOW and they are cowards who will not stand up for what 76% of Americans want, and what Americans overwhelmingly voted for with the election of Barack Obama.   Americans have been cheated by health insurance companies; many Americans are denied coverage as health insurance companies aggressively create new ideas to boost their bottom line at the expense of American lives.  Americans have been lied to, misled, manipulated and many have died from health insurance companies making health care decisions to benefit their profits.  Is Congress listening?  I know Republicans are not, but why the heck are Blue Dog Dems turning a blind eye to what Americans are seeking; a single payer health care option.

For these Democrats to abandon the American family in a time of severe financial hardship and high unemployment is unconscionable!   Do not tell Americans what is NOT possible; we know what is possible when health care competition is introduced.  Health insurance companies will have to compete, lower their costs, lower their premiums, up the quality of care, stop denying coverage to millions of Americans; families will have more financial stability and obstructionists will have to move on to another issue-of-the-day.

If you are as outraged as this American is, please contact your Senators (Click here) and urge them to put American families over their political greed; that is what Republicans stand for but NOT Democrats!
