Republicans, Right Wing & Religious Right, Prelude to Violence
Martin Luther King, Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
The radical right, religious right and overall hate groups are as intent today as never before in destroying democracy in America. In a new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, entitled “The Second Wave: Return of the Militias, clearly demonstrates the danger of hate groups who are in part, spurred on by Republican Leaders, both in Congress, right wing media, and religious zealots who appear to the core of the worst in all of us, hate and fear. What is going on?
Let’s review some of the hate perpetrated by Republicans, right wingers and the religious right:
- Aug 21 ’09 – Baptist Pastor Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona: “God hates Barack Obama, I hate Barack Obama. I hate Barack Obama. God wants me to hate Barack Obama.” “Our country is run by faggots.”
- July 27 – Rep. Frank Kratovil: hung in effigy by right wing health care protester in Salisbury, MD.
- Aug 3 – Rep. Brad Miller received death threats over his support of health care reform.
- Aug 4 – Glenn Beck called President Barack Obama a “racist” with “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”
- Aug 6 – Glenn Beck of FOX News acts out the assassination, he says as a joke, of Speaker Nancy Pelosi by poisoning her.
- Aug 7 – Rep. Brian Baird received faxed death threat “Death to all Marxists, foreign and domestic” and a phone call “”You think Timothy McVeigh was bad, there is a Ryder Truck out there with your name on it,”
- Aug 9 – Rep. Dennis Moore received 2 death threats over health care reform.
- Aug 9 – Rep. David Scott discovered a 4 foot swastika painted on his office sign and received a faxed death threat.
- Aug 9 – President Barack Obama town hall experienced right winger William Kostric holstering loaded handgun and carrying a sign “It’s time to water the tree of liberty” implying it’s time to shed blood. He was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Sic Semper Tyrannis”, which were shouted by Abraham Lincoln’s assassin and it was the same shirt Timothy McVeigh was wearing when arrested after the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 where 168 innocent Americans lost their lives.
- Aug 9 – Richard Terry Young was arrested in New Hampshire after sneaking past security and into the high school just before President Obama was to speak. He was carrying a knife and had loaded gun in his truck.
- Aug 8 – Rep Gabrielle Giffords witnessed a concealed gun being dropped in the middle of a town hall where right wing protestors were yelling, screaming and disturbing the meeting.
- Aug 11 – Sen. Ben Cardin town hall had a right wing protestor carrying a sign “Death to Obama” and “Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids“.
- Jul 18 – Republican Catherine Crabill calls for Republicans to ‘bear arms’.
- Aug 09 – Republican right wingers and Free Republic call President Obama’s 11 year old daughter Malia “A typical street whore.” “Ghetto street trash”, “Wonder when she will get her first abortion. “
- Jun 1 09 – Dr. George Tiller was assassinated by a right wing extremist.
- Aug 7 – Rush Limbaugh and FOX News continue to call President Obama “Hitler and a “Nazi”.
- Jun 10 – Stephen Johns, security guard at U.S. Holocaust Museum was murdered by right wing extremists James von Brunn
- Jun 2 – Southern Baptist preacher Wiley Drake is praying for “God to kill President Obama.”
There is so much more. Congressional leaders, Sarah Palin, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin, Rep. Virginia Foxx, and a host of other right wing extremists continue to lie to Americans scaring them into believing the government is setting up “death panels”, “will kill Grandma” and on and on it goes. Elected Republican officials who vowed to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States are telling their constituents they should be very afraid – health care reform will kill you and Obama plans to take away your guns. These same Republicans and their right wing friends even buy PR campaigns to promote their fear mongering. The saddest part is that many people, especially in the South, actually buy-in the lies. They want to turn politics into violence and they are using domestic terrorism to inflame militias groups, religious nuts, and people who may not be smart enough to get to the truth.
We should remember well the lie sold to America by George W Bush and Dick Cheney selling a war about weapons of mass destruction and creating an 8 year era of fear-mongering when every few months that old ‘Terror Level’ would move up or down. Now we know even that was manipulated for political gain.
Most people today forget the days of Senator Joe McCarthy, when back in the 1950’s, tried to instill fear in the American people over Communism. He had his gang looking under every rock and nook and cranny bringing false accusations and charges against entertainers and politicians accusing each of them, in great theater, they were supporters of the Communist Party. After a while that witch hunt was finally exposed for what is was, a sham, but only after many American’s lives were ruined.
Right wingers such as Sean Hannity, Chris Wallace and FOX News are now creating more hysteria about the Veterans Administration book “Your Life, Your Choices” which contains the same advance planning required of all health care organizations under federal law and has been in use since 1997 and was developed with the input of interfaith ministers.” Of course they do not want to mention this.
As posted by Crooks and Liars in a documentary for NBC Radio on March 3, 1969 – we’ve been a country fed on fear, hate and paranoia for a very long time. It appears to have cropped up in our DNA:
Arthur Schlesinger Jr. “We are today the most frightening people on this planet. The ghastly things we do to our own people, the ghastly things we do to other people, these must at least compel us to look searchingly at ourselves and our society before hatred and violence rushes on to more evil, and finally tear our nation apart. . . . we cannot blame the epidemic of murder at home on deranged and solitary individuals, separate from the rest of us. For these individuals are plainly weak and suggestible men stamped by our society with a birth rite of hatred and a compulsion toward violence. We must recognize, I believe that the evil is in us, that it springs from some dark intolerable tension in our history and our institutions. It is almost as though some primal curse had been fixed on our nation. We are a violent people with a violent history, and the instinct for violence has seeped into the bloodstream of our national life.”
What will happen next? When will these extremists, who are on the verge of serious violence, be set off and by what or whom? Should America expect another assassination attempt on a United States President or the mass murder of innocent bystanders at a town hall meeting or another Oklahoma City style bombing?
The true goal of the Republican Party, their right wing and media supporters along with the religious right is the same as it has always been. They want a totalitarian and theocratic society, one which can control and manipulate the minds of weak-minded sheep, which can be scared into obscene acts of violence.
Their reality can be witnessed by the right-wing fear mongers who have their flocks worked into frenzy, under the guise of health care reform. These sheep are simpleton’s naïve enough to fall for the cons presented by those lording over them and many have no clue how they and their families are being manipulated by the powerful and wealthy, by Corporate Health Insurance Companies and the NRA and by the Republican Party and their media pundits. Interestingly enough it appears the leaders of this ‘hate parade’ buy into those words from Adolph Hitler “What luck for the rulers that men do not think.” Of course they sling the ‘Hitler” word around Democrats as a distraction from their own heinous plan.
The shame of it all is these same individuals are scared of their own shadows and choose not to know or seek the truth in matters of domestic terrorism, health care, right wing mobs or armed militias; it is much easier to hate when you have no value of self or morality.
Americans would do well to read up their U.S. History when 618,000 Americans died. Think this cannot happen again? That is what the right wing, Republicans, extremists and the religious right wants you to think. Will Americans choose to walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness? Remember, words matter.
