I have been working on my family tree a few months. I knew my cousin James Michael Brantley down in Savannah had passed away in 1985. I called and talked with his dad last night. He said Michael joined the military to because he wanted to serve his country.. He was killed while serving over seas by "friendly" fire but his death was never investigated because he was gay. I also found that his grave down in Savannah doesn't even have a military marker. In memory of James Michael Brantley Sept 4, 1962 - April 25, 1985

The American Political landscape has gone to crap over the past couple elections due to special interests. We need to stand up for our rights and take back our country from Big Pharma, Big Tobbacco, Big Insurance and really just big corporations. It is time for our elections to stop being purchased.

Hm, your article is good, except in its incorrect portrayal of the Religious Right as racist. There are actually heaps of black people and Latinos and Asians in the fundamentalist Christian camp - and membership is growing fastest in developing countries, such as the nations of Africa, Asia and Latin America. It's not really a "white" movement. Why would so many non-whites support a racist movement? You guys really need to check your facts and come up with an explanation why a so-called racist movement enjoys massive popularity among blacks, females, and other U.S. minorities.

The common Statement of Faith of most denominations that claim children are inherently faulty from birth because of some apparent genetic spiritual guilt over Adam and Eve's sins, and their need of repentance and saving lest they receive eternal damnation for simply not believing in Jesus is an ancient system of psychological abuse.

Children are told that they sinners at birth because of Adam and Eve's disobedience and because they will eventually sin themselves. It is impressed upon them that because of this curse of sin at birth (that God put on them), that they are so worthless and faulty that they deserve nothing less than eternal torture. God bore false witness on all future generations for the sins of two people; he forced us to be sick and commands us to be well or face certain doom.

Telling humanity, over and over again, that they are incapable of being moral on their own without God is what we call reinforced conditioning. Rejecting God, Jesus and Christianity leads to certain doom, and the only alternative they acknowledge is the urgent need to accept their authority before it is too late. Threats are the hallmark of the wicked. Any God who uses threats is a wicked god, and anyone who follows such a god is just as wicked.

Children are told they have helped put the nails in the hands and feet of Jesus, since they are sinners at birth, and admitting this guilt gives them the reward of living with the victim for eternity. Denying this guilt and need for God's forgiveness results in eternal damnation. When punishment and reward are involved, there can be no morality.

If disobedience and thinking for ourselves got us in trouble with God in the first place, and passive obedience is necessary, then humans have no free will and are slaves to a God who has given conflicting messages in the bible about sin, faith, and salvation.

Any Christian church who preaches and supports this theology is practicing psychological abuse. Any Christian church who does not support that theology and only teaches love without sin and damnation has a theology that is not supported by the Bible.

The widespread unawareness of the psychological abuse in Christianity and similar traditions like the Jehovah Witnesses, is not unusual, and I can understand why people laugh at that idea until it is bluntly pointed out to them....

On top of this, Christian faith demands that people accept its assertions without question, and fear and guilt is used to keep people from rejecting its authority. Difficult questions that cannot be averted are answered with a simple response of relying on faith.

Critical thinking is the search for truth and is a part of education to assess our beliefs and evaluate the worth of what we hear second hand. Christian faith relies on accepting a "truth" without question, assessment, logical analysis, or evidence.

The bible tells us that gaining knowledge and a conscience led to hellfire and thinking for ourselves is what got us in trouble with God in the first place. It says anything that is not faith is sin.

Relying on faith to avoid rational thinking in the face of doubt is a cowards way of life, and if faith is the only way you can accept an assertion, you are conceding it cannot be accepted by its own merits.

There are serious logical implications for the Christian who shyly avoids the truth because it "creates doubt" and who boldly touts that Satan wants us to believe he is God and be afraid of the truth because it creates doubt. The Bible shows us that God is jealous, wrathful, murderous, vain, unjust, and a tempter who blinds people and confuses them so that they don't get Jesus' message and who has already chosen those are are to be saved since the beginning of time. These are the same attributes Christians give to Satan, and we can easily conclude that the Satan has convinced the world he doesn't exist by making people believe he is the biblical god......

And if you did some research, you would know that renowned author and journalist, Christopher Hitchens, has already pointed out that Mother Theresa was not a saint. She was by record a fundamentalist, a fanatic, and a fraud.

She denied medical help to those in her Calcutta hospice and she used the money that she was given to build 100-500 convents in 100 countries bearing the name of her order, rather than use it to make sure those people got better care. These patients slept on cots, were denied family visits, and were left to die, while she went to hospitals in the U.S. when she was sick.

Mother Theresa thought suffering brought them closer to God, and claimed poverty was a gift from God.

At the expense of those in her hospice, she gained money to give to the Catholic Church. She didn't use the money to get them better care, she was a sadist who promoted her religion at the expense of their suffering and lives, while she traveled around the world and received over 100 awards for her "acts of kindness."

Christian family and marriage values, Christian anti-abortion issues, and Christian ideas of love are not supported by the Bible, nor are they anything that Jesus taught.

The contempt that the Bible has for women and children is probably unmatched in any other literature, not to mention the contempt that God and Jesus had for Gentiles. The entire theme is about God and Jesus' partiality for the Jews. Paul (a man who never met or saw an earthly Jesus), not Jesus, made Jesus' message available for Gentiles.

The Bible undermines Christian teachings because the religion has cherry picked its contents and misrepresented its context. The bible is a book about the Jews, and Jesus Himself denied his message to Gentiles. It is a contradiction for non-Jews to find any meaning in it for them.

The treatment of women, children, and Gentiles in the Bible should cause any compassionate, self-realizing moral person who has actually read the book to want to throw it in the nearest bond fire.

Any church, which is a large majority of them, that teach people delusions of worthlessness and guilt - claiming humans are inherently bad from birth and incapable of being intrinsically moral, who use eternal torture as a threat for not believing in a jealous, wrathful, vain, unjust, murderous god who tempts people (all attributes of the biblical God) is a hateful and sadistic church with a misanthropic idea and hateful practice. The veil of love and omnibenevolence does not conceal the horror of Orthodox Christianity nor of the hateful acts of the biblical deity from the skeptical eye.

This is simply false. I was raised a protestant and was taught that a husband should love and respect as much as christ loved the church. This is the highest level of respect there is. The same is true for children. Many people misinterepret the bible. Many people have low reading comprehension and can't understand that scriptures like spare the rod spoil the child are not meant as literal. In other words if you do not teach your child with love they will not follow the right way. Not literally beat the child with a rod. It does take intelligence to interpret the bible correctly. Also, unfortunately many people use and twist religion as a way to try and justify the bad things they are doing. No church my parents ever took me to as a child advocated abuse of children or women. Just need to find the right church and the right minister.

To call Franklin Graham vermin would give vermin a bad name. He is a bigoted opportunist who wears his "religion" like a pimp wears a big diamond ring. To Charles Vaughan, who wrote in to say people who criticize Graham are not Believers, I say it's a good thing, for what he and Graham believe in is pure evil.

As a writer suggesting the ignorance and irrational arguments of those with an opposing view, I would expect that to mean that your arguments are suppose to be truthful and accurate. Of course with a title containing the word hypocrisy I suppose it was advertised. First let me tell you that I am not an NRA member and don't plan to be.
This is for reasons we may agree on, but I do not find your argument to be genuine. If you are to use the tracking of firearms to Mexico as an example, than shouldn't you also include that the guns that were tracked were provided under Fast and Furious. Since those guns were purposely sold to gun runners by our own government, I would think that an honest and rational conversation might include that. Although I do recall certain individuals citing the findings of those weapons to be reason to strengthen gun sale laws, Many of those same people also new that those guns were intentionally given to gun runners by the ATF. Is that what you mean by reasonable conversation? Lets move on.
So you conclude that those who disagree with stricter gun laws due so out of paranoia and ignorance. Perhaps there are other reasons for not seeing it your way. To suggest that any one is o.k. with the murder of others is as disgusting as the act itself. I as a law abiding citizen now that I will respect and follow any laws that may pertain to gun ownership. That being said I find it nyieve to think that anyone with unlawful intent would due the same. How exactly due you believe that a law that keeps certain weapons out of my hand does the same for criminals? With a wide open southern boarder, that for some inherant reason is destened to stay that way,how do you expect to keep weapons out of the hands of law breakers with laws? Now I know this can't be a trusted source just due to the citing of studies from the Brady Campain. I'm not even going waste time on that one I think it's well established.
As an observation many of the examples you have listed above were not acted out with the use of what has been branded as assault weapons, but instead with hand guns and hunting rifles. Also I may add the examples that include acts of voilence carried out with weapons obtained illegaly. If it was already illegal for them to obtain them then how would additional law help. That again is an exemple of how I would abide by the law and they would not.
Now on to the comments of the supposed zealots. I would challenge you to find the quote where any of these two ever called for an armed action. The facts are they have not. For you to have posted such an out right lie tells me you have little character and even less honesty in your arguments. Now my intent is not to defend these two, but just to point out the hypocracy of this so called reasonable article.
The most idiotic thing in this article has to be your closer. "earn the right to possess one "
No one in America earns there rights. This idea of earning them can only come from that of a tyrant. I was born with mine sir. Now despite your religious beliefs, the whole idea is that my rights were not givin to me by any man on this earth and will not be taking away by any man on this earth. If it be determined that an individual need not posess a firearm due to crime committed or mental defect than we can jump on that band wagon together. The slogan " Guns don't kill people, people kill people." does not pertain to or speak at all to the relation of guns and safety. It speaks to the fact that while some choose to respect and follow the law there are others that don't. Apply where needed.
With this idea that gun ownership should be earned, comes with a predetermined idea that you will have earned it. So then I would say that you also would believe yourself to one that may determine who else has earned it. When we have what you call logical and reasonable conversation we should do so without holding ourselves above any one else. I am all for stricter laws on law breakers, not on law abiders.

Sorry, you completely missed the point. Blaming gays for destroying families is absurd. The article addresses bigoted rightwingers, so-called christians, for ignoring the horrors of child abuse, sexual abuse; therefore they have no right to blame gays for anything.
