The Democratic Congress Is Wimping Out on Americans

Democrats.jpgI have been an avid campaigner and supporter of President Obama. Instead of voting against John McCain and Sarah Palin I voted FOR the message of change along with millions of Americans.  Although President Obama is still relatively new in his Presidency, almost 5 months long, his aggressive agenda, which I support, seems to have some cracks showing in many of his issues, but more importantly the democratically controlled Congress acts as if they are the Party of the Minority. The Democratically controlled Congress has not been the champion or stalwart in supporting change that the majority of the American voting populous supported.  With the Republican Party at its weakest point in modern U.S. history, the President and Democrats are taking a measured, cautious, middle of the road approaches to many key issues they promised Americans.  Their wimpish leadership is failing miserably and may cost them in 2010 and 2012.  Americans need leaders, strong leaders and although this is a new era Congressional Democrats remind me they are the same old tired, archaic and worn out politics who have served for decades in Congress and shy away from challenges and real reform.  If there was ever a time in modern history when government could enact real change for American families it is now.

I give his praise to President Obama in reaching out to America’s enemies and allies alike in attempting to set a new tone of reconciliation, peace and dialogue.  This 180 degree change from George W Bush and Dick Cheney has been welcomed by most of the world, for which we are all citizens.

I congratulate and applaud President Obama on many of the reforms and bills enacted during his first 100 days and they are many from creating a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, challenging al-Queda by adding more troops in Afghanistan; to his huge challenges in handling the worst U.S. Economic Recession since the 1930s with his AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT and HELPING FAMILIES SAVE THEIR HOMES ACT.  I commend him for signing the LILLY LEDBETTER FAIR PAY ACT, the HEALTH CARE FOR 11 MILLION CHILDREN.  I support him for signing the MILITARY PROCUREMENT REFORM to government waste and fraud; for signing the Fraud Enforcement Recovery Act FIGHTING MORTGAGE AND CORPORATE FRAUD & CREATING COMMISSION ON CAUSES OF CRISIS; and challenging Americans volunteerism in signing the EDWARD M. KENNEDY SERVE AMERICA ACT and the many other initiatives, including eliminating torture.  These are no small feats of accomplishments especially when dealing with the Republican Party of NO which always puts politics over the good of the America family.

But, where is the leadership when it comes to breaking established U.S. law and signed treaties?  The Democratic Congress would prefer to allow potential crimes by not investigating war crimes and illegal torture which put a huge black eye on America.  Maybe there were no crimes, I suspect there were a great many.  As a citizen I would be prosecuted for torturing someone, foreign or domestic, but Democrats appear to allow torture on a national, government supported scale.  Why will the Democratic Congress not investigate these illegal torture claims? Americans who do not think the Government should be able to invoke state secrets to cover up the fact that there was a rendition program and who believe that allowing a previous administration to get away with curtailing or destroying Constitutional Rights…..just because it looks bad for one Administration to investigate and prosecute the last one…..no matter how egregious their crimes is ridiculous and criminal.

The Democratic Congress is not pushing for the OPTION of a single payer health care plan, which is supported by 63% of Americans, why?  They have the numbers, they have the power, they have the support of the American people.  Democrats are historically not known for taking on challenges and typically shy away from issues that appear to them to be too ‘tough’ to tackle.  These namby-pamby leaders will be facing re-election and I suspect will pay a significant price for not following the will of the people.  In many ways politicians are politicians and their personal agendas be they Republican or Democrat is all about scoring points and willing elections, damn the populous at all costs.

Where is the representation of Americans who do not have a lobby, who do not ‘own’ the Congress?  Is that not why in this Democratic society we elect people to represent us, our goals, our security.

The Democrats were elected and given majority rule in Washington, they are the majority party and if they will not act like a majority party, then they do not deserve to be the majority party. This is not the leadership the American people expected.

President Obama’s motto “YES WE CAN” resonated with the public, but it apparently did not resonate with Congress.  Just as the Republican Party pushed through George W Bush’s agenda for more than 8 years, Democrats need to get off their lazy butts and being to act like leaders and stand up for Americans.  Stand up Nancy Pelosi, take charge Harry Reid, grow a pair Chris Dodd, and lead on Patrick Leahy; show us your ‘stuff’ Dick Durbin!  I suspect your slow, methodical, cautious and timid approach is hurting the President and the American people.

Right now, the Democratic leadership, who allowed and in many ways were complicit in bringing down the ‘financial system’ and who witnessed one of the most historic of all Presidential Elections receiving a mandate from the majority of the American people, are acting as if they didn’t learn a damn thing from the election nor did they learn anything from the past 8 years and Democrats sure seem that they do not care about the consequences of their inactions.

Do you not remember how the Republican leaders steamrolled their Democratic counterparts”? This means the Republicans actually did something without the Democrats’ permission; why doesn’t the Democratic lead Congress do the same?

Leaders recognize opportunities. Leaders take risks and make sacrifices. Leaders educate and inspire. Leaders solve problems. Leaders serve those for whom they work; the people.  America needs real Democratic Leadership and we need it now!

America needs leadership now, grown up leadership, adult leadership, not a democratically controlled Congress that is currently debating meaningless matters.   The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

If the Democratic Congress does not step up to the plate in behalf of the American people, they will find themselves once again in the Party of the Minority.  May God help us all if these weak-kneed simpletons lose control because they do not have the where-with-all to stand up for hardworking, taxpaying American families.
