The Religious Right Turned Christianity Into a Cult

religiousright.jpgThe religious right, sometimes referred to as the ‘Christian Right’ has lead an unprecedented effort to convince Americans we have become a corrupt country, we are headed for ‘Armageddon’ and liberals, Democrats, President Obama, the ACLU, and gays are destroying the ‘white’ fabric of America.

What was once a faith-based religion, founded on Christ’s teaching of helping the poor, feeding the hungry, clothing and aiding the sick and loving one another as Christ loves; has been abandoned and thrown out at the shores from the east coast to the west.

Unfortunately many churches, Mormons, Baptists and Evangelicals and others have openly embraced the rhetoric of the religious right while abandoning what initially brought them to a place of faith as many Americans abandon their own faith in support of non-Biblical teachings buying in to every nuance presented to them. The ultimate goal of the religious right is to impose religious ideology directly into government.  Rather than honoring the separation of church and state, this cult wants to inject bigotry and prejudice and to marginalize people who are not ‘white’ or who are ‘different’.  Their one agenda, to scare ‘Christians’ into following their conservative views or face an eternity in hell; as they attempt to overthrow the U.S. Democratic Government and make it into their own ‘image’. They attempt to hide behind the protections of the Constitution even while they actively work to subvert it.

Many forget the Southern Baptists, founded in 1845, supported slavery, started the KKK, opposed equal rights, have an intense hatred of Blacks and gays.

One of the reasons their version of Christianity thrives is because fearful people want security and justice in an insecure and unjust world. The religious right views God as an angry vigilante who punishes people they personally do not like or who threatens their propaganda.  On one side of their mouths they use the Bible to rationalize brutality and vigilante violence, while on the other side of their mouths they speak of values and virtues. This while they cheered at the murder of Dr. George Tiller.

Their organizations and churches receive tax-exempt status, yet they willingly break U.S. Tax laws and preach politics in direct violation of IRS tax-exempt rules.

Christ is not a part of this type of cult and they give God no place other than to use His Name as a means to an end.  Many of the religious right and their right-wing leaders have built multi-million dollar empires accumulating massive wealth as they give marching orders through lies and deception selling their smoke and mirrors to their naïve sheep who follow them ‘without question’ as they too abandon their faith.  Like worshipers of the Golden Calf, in the time of Moses, they have turned from Christ to the cult of the religious-right, all the while the religious right is peddling their religious right wares of selling books, videos, tapes and other hate produced paraphernalia.  The right-wing ‘Christians’ are a sucker for anything with a Christian label, slap a ‘Christian sticker’ on something and watch the money pour in.

  • Baptist Pastor Steven Anderson and pastor Wiley Drake, the leader of the Buena Park Southern Baptist Church in California said they pray for the death of President Obama and incite violence with their congregants bringing guns to Presidential and town hall events.
  • Pastor John Hagee preaches about how God sent Hitler to hunt the Jews, calls the Catholic Church the ‘Great Whore’ and all Muslims are programmed to kill.
  • Mike Huckabee recently said under President Obama’s health care plan, Sen. Ted Kennedy would have been told to “go home to take pain pills and die” during his last year of life. Huckabee also joked to the NRA about shooting President Obama.
  • Erik Prince with Blackwater had a hidden agenda to wipe out all the Muslims in his armed militia came in contact with, in the name of God.
  • Sarah Palin scares Americans telling them there are ‘death panels’.
  • Michelle Maukin tells her followers the government is setting up “re-education camps”.
  • Pat Robertson says hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment of ‘gays’, He also says if hate crimes legislation was passed, then weird people who like to have sex with ducks.
  • Rick Warren said homosexuality is comparable to incest and pedophilia.
  • Sen. Jeff Sessions called the NAACP un-American and communist-inspired and he thought the Ku Klux Klan was OK.
  • Rep. Chip Pickering, Sen. John Ensign and Gov. Mark Sanford carry on adulterous affairs as they build a cult to create a universal Christian theocracy, a world where all governments are subordinate to this peculiar and secretive Christian sect, all supported by the ‘Youth With A Mission’ organization.
  • Crisis Pregnancy Centers manipulates pregnant women into giving up their unborn so this ‘Christian’ adoption organization can make money by farming out their offspring to Christian homes, yet they turn their backs on women who choose to keep their babies.
  • They try to rewrite American history turning the founding fathers from deists to Christian Fundamentalists.
  • Republican Wally Herger praises American right-wing terrorists and ‘God blesses’ the extremists making the announcement.

The religious right knows that words matter and the mouth speaks what is truly in their hearts.

“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. Matthew 15:18

“Their tongue is a deadly arrow; It speaks deceit; With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, But inwardly he sets an ambush for him.  Jeremiah 9:8

Unfortunately, many Americans are realizing that church is where one goes to learn to be hateful, intolerant, judgmental and condemning of others; where religious right and right-wing ‘Christians’ choose hate over love and disdain over compassion.  Many parents take these messages and use them to educate their own offspring perpetuating the endless cycle of the right-wing’s message. Without the religious right where would modern day hate come from?

Yet these same so called ‘Christians’ remain silent when there is a 50% divorce rate in America; they do nothing to help the poor, the homeless, or the hundreds of thousands of orphans they created.  Their arrogance of anyone who does not believe in their ‘version’ of right-wing Christianity is a heathen, an infidel, a demon, un-American.  They are silent when senators, governors and pastors engage in adultery but scream from the roof tops when they see two gay men kissing.  They are right, everyone else in the world is wrong.  This is the true definition of hypocrisy!

They fight against legal abortion rights as they both encourage and threaten violence, (although Christ never mentions abortion) and then turn away when downtrodden unwed mothers need help only to re-appear to use the legal system as a weapon by contacting child services when they do not ‘like’ the child’s situation.

America is about the youngest country on earth, yet the ‘religious cults’ have taken on being the spiritual police of the world.  They believe they are the ONLY people who have access to God and all other religions are heathen. The religious right believes God has given them the only ‘truth’; that God only speaks to ‘them’ as they discount the magnitude and omniscience of God who could be powerful enough to speak to people in other countries and of other faiths, including Muslims.

So many from the religious right bear ‘false witness’. They teach homosexuality is an abomination (even though modern day experts say it is inherent) yet they conveniently choose to overlook the other abominations stoning their rebellious children, or to stone women who are not virgins when they marry or people who curse their parents should be put to death..  They ignore the abomination of eating pork or it is acceptable to own slaves. This hypocrisy of the ‘Christian right’ to pick and choose while ignoring the truth.

One of the greatest diatribes is now the religious right, fighting against health care reform for Americans continues their ‘false witnessing’ saying reform will support abortion, rationed health care for the elderly and give government control of personal health decisions, all of which are untrue. They say health care reform is against God’s design. What? Somehow how I do not draw the same conclusion:

Matthew 25: 41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 “Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45 “Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’

Cynthia Boaz, Asst. Prof. of Political Science, Consultant on Nonviolent Action and Strategy writing her article in the Huffington Post aptly said:

So if taking care of the least amongst is the first responsibility of Christians, how can there be any debate on whether universal health care is “moral” or “ethical” or “responsible”? Sure, there is plenty of room for discussion about the logistics of a universal policy, but I am completely flabbergasted as to why we – in the self-proclaimed “Christian states of America” (and self-proclaimed model democracy, come to that) have not yet reached a consensus on this first, most critical point. If we aren’t willing to simply say that yes, everyone must be taken care of (and we must as a society find a way to do that), then what exactly are we doing?

I do not believe all Christians are stupid, but almost every stupid person I have encountered calls themselves a Christian.

I confess I am a Christian and I believe in the mercy, grace and love Christ taught.  The religious- right and right-wing cults of the 21st century do not mirror any of the values presented in Biblical history.  Any organization or cult that uses bigotry as the ‘glue’ that binds its motivations, actions and uses their lies to pass the ‘collection plate’ is not what true Christians, people of any faith or Americans, believe.  Where are the Christians speaking out against such abhorrent behavior of the religious right?

“I like your Christ. I do not like your “Christians”. They are so unlike your Christ” Mahatma Gandhi

One Response to “The Religious Right Turned Christianity Into a Cult”

  1. It’s hard for Christian values to co-exist in a capitalistic society. With the “love of money” being the root of all evil, as described in the Bible, one clearly sees what has happened. This country has become as t he “money changers” in the temple and God would throw them out. These so-called Christians are Christians so long as someone doesn’t mess with their money or their profits then to Hell with Christian values. That’s the real story of whats happening in America.
