Why the Religious Right has hurt America
Most people believe ‘honesty is the best policy’; teach our children to ‘tell the truth’; ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’; and ‘do not judge lest you be judged’.
Conversely most Americans believe that lying, being deceitful, blaming others, passing the buck are not qualities endearing to core American beliefs. The U. S. Government, especially in the last decade, and years beyond, have set an example for the American public, sanctioning those erroneous values which degrade our society and those degraded values are supported by many religious leaders.
To name a few, it makes no sense that:
1. An American President took this country into an illegal war based on lies and deceit of the American people
2. Instituted policies to spy on Americans at will, with search warrants
3. Established and operated secret prisons
4. Sanctioned torture
5. Lied to Congress
6. Would not allow prescription drug negotiations for American seniors
What is even more surprising is that many American “Religious Leaders”, who profess to have Christian values, support and continue to support this non-Christian behavior. In concert with the U.S. Government, they charge Americans who do not support the actions by their own government, are ‘traitors;, ‘un-American’, and are ‘liberals’. Where are the Christian values in their actions?
Many of the more popular ‘Religious Righters’ believe they speak with authority from God, they expect their congregations to blindly follow them without dissension, they believe the are infallible, they use fear to force Americans into submission, and they cling to certain interpretations of scripture to further their own cause and refuse to look at religious history or ideas that go beyond their own narrow beliefs.
They use many of the same fear-mongering tactics over and over again to raise money for their self-serving purposes, just as the Nazi’s did, stating abortionists and gays are endangering their families, telling Americans “give me money now to save America!”
How ridiculous! The ‘Religious Right’ leaders should be setting an example, speaking out against our government lying to Americans, speaking out against torture, speaking out against government’s invasion of Americans’ privacy. They should be giving to the poor, taking care of the sick, the needy, the elderly and children in this country.
The ‘Religious Right’ condemns Christians of faiths other than their own. John Hagee called the Catholic Church “The Great Whore” and in one of his videos suggests the Pope is the anti-Christ! Mr. Hagee, who is divorced and remarried years ago, has also been on record with intolerant views on women, African Americans, and other factions of the American fabric.

Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Rod Parsley, Fred Phelps and many “Religious Right’ leaders have a large strategy that has been politically and financially useful to them through the years, even to the point of endorsing discrimination while forcing their congregants to choose between the ‘Religious Right’ and their personal agendas rather than encouraging congregations to follow the teaching of Christ.

And what about all these ‘ministers of the gospel’ who have their own shortcomings; remember sex scandals of Ted Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Coy Privette, Rick Hawkins, Curt Franklin and a host of other lesser know ministers. And the list is even longer for elected government officials; Dennis Haster, Rep Mark Foley, Rep Gerry Studds, Rep Dan Crane, and other GOP members, Bob Livingston, Jack Ryan, Bob Packwood, Larry Craig just to name a few.
I too am an American, honorably discharged after proudly serving in the military during the Vietnam war, with a son now serving. I am a Christian, I pay taxes, I support the United States, but I am extremely concerned the direction the ‘Religious Right’ and the political power they ‘appear to possess’ is negatively impacting Godly principles, American liberties and the right of all Americans.
It is time to return to the beliefs most Americans hold dear: ‘honesty is the Best policy’, ‘Do unto Others as you would have them do unto you’, ‘do not judge lest you be judged’.
