David Vitter Submits a Slew of Bills in Senate

Senator David Vitter, R-La., filed a barrage of legislation on the first day of the 111th Congress, 34 bills and resolutions.  Catering to the Religious Right, Vitter’s bills include topics such as abortion, public prayer, stem cell research, home schooling, drugs, the death penalty, illegal immigration and protecting the American Flag.  With America’s economy in the ‘toilet’ it appears Vitter does not give a darn about Americans, the loss of jobs, savings, homes and health care.  What Vitter does care about is seeking re-election in 2010.  Although Vitter says he wants to work on the economy, his words certainly do not support his actions.

Remember, it was Vitter whose telephone number was found in the records of an escort service in Washington and Vitter later acknowledged publically, a “very serious sin” admitting his adulterous affair.   I am sure he will be more careful next time.

Vitter said on January 8, 2009, he recognized that most of his more conservative agenda, much of it filed in past Congresses, stands little chance of becoming law in President Barack Obama’s Washington, where Democrats control both houses of Congress. Let us hope so!

“Obviously this is a completely different political landscape, a much more Democratic Congress and a new, liberal Democratic administration that makes some of my goals, which are consistent with more conservative Louisiana values, more difficult to attain,” but I’m certainly not going to give up and get less ambitious about what I fight for. I am going to pursue all the issues that I’ve actively pursued in the past.”

I will say I do support one of Vitter’s proposals to allow importation of prescription drugs which would help seniors’ lower drug prices.  This position is in concert with President Obama’s plan on the same issue.  Remember it was the Bush Administration, AARP, and the Republicans who denied allowing the federal government to negotiate prescription drug prices, favoring instead the pocketbooks of Prescription Drug Companies.

On the other end of the specter is Senator Diane Feinstein, a senior Senator from California who is 2nd in filing proposed legislation with 22 bills filed last week.  The majority of her filings are for help and relief for Americans. This is the significant difference between Democrats who opt to help Americans and Republicans who opt to help themselves.

Specifically, Vitter wants to prohibit family planning money from going to any entity that performs abortions, although abortions are legal in this country.  Vitter wants to keep credit cards out of the hands of illegal immigrants which is so misguided.  He apparently supports allowing credit card companies to charge exorbitant interests rates and continue their barrage of credit card marketing to America’s youth and adults, regardless of whether it continues to put Americans in debt and at risk, if they cannot pay.  This is a much more serious issue that disallowing Mexican immigrants to obtain credit and spend money in this country.

Further, he wants to reduce aid to Mexico for every illegal Mexican immigrant who crosses the U.S. border.  How absurd!  I guess he has some magical method of counting.

Vitter also wants to keep the federal government from paying federally financed construction projects to be paid the “locally prevailing wage.”  He would prefer to pay a non-competitive wage which may cause construction jobs from being started because of low wages which may not be competitive in some geographic areas of the country.  What this country needs are jobs, not some obstructionist standing in the way.  Of course Vitter recently obliged himself of a $4700 salary increase as did all of Congress this month.  The average salary in Congress is now about $174,000; this while millions of Americans are suffering from the economic collapse.

Lastly Vitter wants to require drug testing of all welfare recipients, targeting the poorest Americans which further isolates and discriminates against those who are barely getting by, while millions of Americans not on welfare get a free ride.

This is a typical Religious Right, Right-Wing, Republican tactic.  This is why the Republican Party continues to deteriorate.  They have no compassion for the poor; or the needy, or the less fortunate; they come up with ridiculous proposals while the American Titanic is sinking.

David Vitter is someone Americans do not need in Congress and hopefully the good people of Louisiana will NOT re-elect him next year.
