What the 2010 Republican Party Looks Like

We_Got_Nothing.jpgAs Americans we can walk down the street of any major American city from New York to Los Angles, from Washington D.C. to Houston, from Seattle to Chicago and see the result of the Statue of Liberty’s “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door” and witness the immigrant population of this great nation.

African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, Anglos, Indians and Muslims; the healthy and the sick, the rich and the poor, straight and gay; a virtual rainbow of diversity and cultures, which makes America great, may be witnessed in the highways and byways of this nation.   We carry within our bosom the new born babe, survivors of the Holocaust, people from foreign lands seeking a new life for their families; yet we are all mostly directly or indirectly immigrants from Europe, Asia, or Africa.American has overcome slavery, a woman’s right to vote, the Voting Rights Act, interracial marriage, school integration and in some states the right of same-sex couples to marry, all under the Civil Liberties afforded by the United States Constitution and our Bill of Rights. Millions endured hatred from the South and the violence from the Ku Klux Klan from those who sought to destroy our civil way of life. We endured the witch hunt from Republican Joe McCarthy’s fear-filled Communist subversion ripping into Congressional leaders and entertainers; from the riots of the 60’s to the protests of the ill-fated Vietnam War.  With all the former, and while many civil rights are yet to be realized, America has advanced in the cause of Liberty and Justice for all.

For decades our families, our parents and grandparents have enjoyed the social benefits from our government in caring for the our country’s needy with Medicare health insurance and Social Security to see us through our old age, tax money most Americans deem well spent in caring for the needs of its citizens, even as Republicans consistently vote to eliminate and take these benefits from our citizens.

And then it happened; no one ever expected it; the election of the first Black President of the United States of America was swept into office with one of the largest voting margins of our time with a message of hope and change for Middle Americans. History was made!

This single historic event brought out the great pride and the best in most Americans yet fueled such hatred and angry in fringe populations of mostly Southern states, reminiscent of the days when the South was the scourge of the country with their violence and murder against anyone who was not White as they opposed Reconstruction and whose goal was to maintain ‘white supremacy’ marching in drag of white dresses demonstrating their cowardice of burning crosses, similar to the jihadists of modern day.

This past 18 months of Barack Obama’s Presidency has brought to the surface yet again, the mostly white bigotry experienced decades ago. With fear and untruths as their motto, Americans have witnessed the insanity of hate, fueled by Republicans, right wing news organizations and radio personalities encouraging violence as they stir up these uneducated bigots like sheep to the slaughter.  Like zombies they believe everything they are told without the slightest initiative to research truth for themselves as they wrap themselves in the American Flag and tote their Bibles as if these props vilify their actions.  Or they proclaim their allegiance to supporting U.S. Soldiers such as Sean Hannity, only to discover his charity was a ruse and a scam against America’s finest.

Their legislative leadership has been very simple, direct and to the point – NO!  In the greatest economic recession in modern history, Republicans have consistently stood against helping American families.

  • They said NO to rebuilding America’s infrastructure and putting Americans back to work.
  • They said NO to restore basic protections against pay discrimination for women.
  • They said NO to responsibly ending the war in Iraq.
  • They said NO to funding for families of fallen soldiers having their expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB.
  • They said NO to the Making Home Affordable” home refinancing plan.
  • They said NO to provide the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) with more than $1.4 billion to improve services to America’s Veterans.
  • They said NO the Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act on February 4, 2009, which provided quality health care to 11 million kids, 4 million who were previously uninsured.
  • They said NO to provide federal support for stem-cell and new biomedical research.
  • They said NO to the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act, expanding on the Making Home Affordable Program to help millions of Americans avoid preventable foreclosures, providing $2.2 billion to help combat homelessness, and helping to stabilize the housing market for everybody,
  • They said NO to provide better body armor to our troops.
  • They said NO to the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to Supreme Court.
  • They said NO the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act that made it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • They said NO to health care reform.
  • They said NO to student loan financial reform for college students.
  • They said NO to American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
  • They said NO to Wall Street regulations.
  • The said NO to allowing female military rape victims’ access to judicial justice.

But Republicans have not always said NO.

  • They said YES to the $700 billion Wall Street Bailout.
  • They said YES to record setting pork barrel spending.
  • They said YES to pass all the cost of their spending to the next generation.
  • They said YES to removing restrictions on Wall Street Banks
  • They said YES to pass the multi-billion dollar prescription drug plan to the next generation without paying for it.
  • They said YES to pass the cost of 2 wars to the next generation.
  • They said YES to spying on Americans enacting the Patriot Act and FISA Bill.
  • They said YES to give the richest Americans the biggest tax break in U.S. history.
  • They said YES to provide big oil companies massive tax breaks.
  • They said YES to allow U.S. Companies to ship jobs overseas.
  • They said YES to allow U.S. Companies to hide their assets in foreign countries to avoid paying taxes.
  • They said YES in taking credit for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
  • They said YES to discontinue Social Security and Medicare, over and over again.

Republicans support, encourage, participate in and engage in bigoted, racist rhetoric, in leading by example and inciting violence in America today.  This is the Party of the segregationists, the John Birchers, with no conscience and no morality.

The recent health care reform debate continued to reveal the truth about Republicans and their Tea party who hurled racist and homophobic slurs at members of Congress during the health care reform vote.

These Republicans chanted “the N-word, 15 times” at Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a hero of the civil rights movement, and his colleague Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN). Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) was spit on, and someone yelled f—-t at openly-gay Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) as he walked through the Capitol complex on Saturday.  Republican Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) supported these hateful comments saying “the remarks were understandable,” Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) and held signs that said things like “Obama bin lyin’ again.”  State Democratic Party offices’ windows have been smashed and some Democratic House Members continue to receive faxes containing hate and pictures of nooses.

Recently many carried signs that announced “Obama’s Plan: White Slavery,” “The American Taxpayers are the Jews for Obama’s Oven,” and “Guns Tomorrow!” RNC Chairman Michael Steele encouraged Tea Partiers to send a “virtual tea bag” to President Obama and Democratic Congressional leadership.

Republican Rep. Steve King (R-IA), implied that the homophobic and racial slurs were “no big deal.”  Republican Rep. Randy Neugebauer of Texas shouted “baby killer” during the health care reform debate, Baptist pastor Wiley Drake has asked for the death of all 219 Democrats who voted for health care reform.  This is the same ‘pastor’ who continues to pray for the death of the President of the United States.  Republican Texas Congressmen Louie Gohmert told the Teabaggers to “remember the Alamo” and said that the only difference between that fight and the health care fight is that “if we lose this battle millions of Americans are going to die.” He also said that “demons” has possessed the Capitol and told a bald face lie that health care reform would “provide $700 million for abortions.”  In Atlanta, a swastika was painted on the office of Democrat Congressman David Scott who also received a flier addressed to “nigga David Scott.

Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner’s even stated that health care reform is akin to “Armageddon!”

Then there are the Republican talk radio pundits.  “We need to defeat these bastards,” said Rush Limbaugh. “We need to wipe them out. Defeat the Democrats, every one of them that voted for this (HCR) bill.” The bill means “leftist radicals will now be making your health care decisions, instead of your doctor,’ warned Limbaugh.”America is hanging by a thread.”

Morning host John Gambling on WOR (710 AM), a long-time critic of the health care bill, said, “Our studio this morning(3-22-10) is draped in black bunting,” and took a call from a listener who said it should be “red bunting, with a hammer and sickle in the middle.”  “This is an ‘ism,’ ” said Gambling.”Communism, socialism, fascism, whatever you call it, that’s not what this country was designed to be.”

Republican tweeters join in the hate: Solomon “Solly” Forell tweeted: “ASSASSINATION! America, we survived the assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy. We’ll surely get over a bullet 2 Barack Obama’s head.”

Another tweet said, “The next American with a clear shot should drop Obama like a habit.” Jay Martin, a college grad who calls himself a hip-hop aficionado, tweeted: “If I lived in DC, I’d shoot him myself. Point blank. Dead f—ing serious.”

Keith Olbermann said it best “In a backwards, sick-to-my-stomach way, I would like to thank whoever shouted at Mr. Lewis and Mr. Carson for proving my previous point. If racism is not the whole of the Tea Party, it is in its heart, along with blind hatred, a total disinterest in the welfare of others, and a full-flowered, self-rationalizing refusal to accept the outcomes of elections, or the reality of Democracy, or of the narrowness of their minds and the equal narrowness of their public support.”

Calling people Niggers, Nazis, Communists, Socialists, Homos, Faggots, and Baby Killers and threatening to assassinate our President demonstrates the physiopathic evil heart that lies in the Republican Party.  This is their true character, this is what they believe, and they will stop at nothing to destroy this great country for the sake of power, money and greed.  I take massive offense to the GOP’s lack of civility and vicious name calling. It offends the people I care about and it offends me, and it offends America.

America has witnessed Republicans carrying guns to rallies, calling for the ‘spilling of blood’ while at the same time they all carry their Social Security Card and Medicare Cards while they attend these KKK style rallies. If the GOP ever had any civility or respect for others, they have surely lost it and turned their backs on the Party of Lincoln of long ago.

We as Americans must do our part to stop this vile action by the Republican Party.  They will be making an all-out effort in the 2010 election to defeat those Democrats who have alone, stood up for hardworking, taxpaying Americans in a time of massive economic upheaval. As Democrats, Progressives and Independents have worked to better the lives of all Americans and legislate; Republicans have obstructed and offered nothing to Americans but rhetoric.

American voters should remember our willingness to take a chance on the change and hope offered by the Obama campaign in 2008. We should also remember the 8 years of the George W Bush Administration and the last time Republicans were in power along with their failed stewardship of our economy, foreign policy and the sense that everyday people could no longer look forward to better lives in the future.   President Barack Obama was resolved to turn GOP failure into the hope that change could bring all Americans a better life.

President Obama’s ability to inspire is an enormous political asset. Being inspired is basically the feeling of empowerment, empowerment to overcome the odds and to overcome fear and his inspiration transformed fear and anger into hope.

We need to inspire, encourage and financially support our Democratic members of Congress and we need to keep our own base inspired in order to keep them mobilized.

Democrats, Progressives and Independents cannot afford to fail in our battle for hope and a better tomorrow, so we must vote in the 2010 election as decidedly as we did for our President in 2008. The future of our country, the success of our President and the hope of millions of Americans depend on us to continue to move America into the 21st century for the sake of jobs, a stable economy and a future for ourselves and our children.

We cannot, we must not sit idly by during the 2010 election and turn over the reins of our Congress to more racist, bigoted and financially unstable Republicans who will continue the exact same policies which nearly lead America off a cliff.  This 2010 election battle will in great measure, determine our ability to continue to generate the kind of inspiration and hope that is so critical to our ability to win all of the battles that lie ahead.  We are responsible for putting President Obama into office; we cannot abandon him in this time of great need for our country.

Our country deserves better than this, regardless of what party one supports, we should all take strong action in 2010 and defeat all Republicans in Congress.  Remember Republicans and their followers are armed, bigoted and dangerous to the American way of life.

“The question is not whether change will come, but whether we can guide that change in the service of our ideals toward a social order that meets the needs of all our people.” RFK

  1. Thanks for the pingback, Iwaller. I completely agree that Obama needs our support to overcome the GOP noise machine’s ongoing deluge of lies. We must provide it.
