Earmark Reform Pledge

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) created the form letter (below) and encourage any interested American to write Congress and tell them to sign CCAGW’s

Earmark Reform Pledge.

“While the “Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007″ does require members of Congress to identify the earmarks they requested in spending bills, a step in the right direction, much more needs to be done.  Members of Congress continue to try to circumvent the rules and throw up roadblocks to prevent me from discovering how my hard-earned tax dollars are spent.

In the aftermath of the scandals that engulfed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, and others, the role earmarks play as Washington’s “currency of corruption” is all too clear.  Yet, Congress continues to lard spending bills with self-serving, special-interest projects that serve no federal interest, are un-authorized, have not been vetted, and are aimed at buying votes.

If you and your fellow lawmakers are truly committed to making this “the most ethical Congress in history,” I call on you to improve and expand upon existing earmark transparency and accountability rules by signing the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste’s 10-point Earmark Reform Pledge, which can be found at www.ccagw.org.

I work hard for my money and deserve to know how you are spending it in Washington.”
